Mata must earn his first-team place at United – Mourinho
There is space for Juan Mata at Manchester United however the midfielder must battle to break into the primary group, chief Jose Mourinho has said.
Mourinho was in control at Chelsea when Mata left Stamford Bridge to join United in January 2014, having won consecutive Player of the Year honors in his two past seasons there.
“He’s here and he buckles down. He realizes that I know he is a decent player and he has space in the squad. Until August 31 the business sector is open for each one of my players that is not cheerful, but rather to be reasonable I think he is (upbeat),” Mourinho told the BBC.
“I think he is cheerful and I am not anticipating that him should request that leave. I am anticipating that him should do what he is doing now, which is to battle for a spot.”
“We have 38 matches in the Premier League, we hope to play a great deal of them in the Europa League and local glasses so in a squad of, suppose, 22 players, there will be a space for everybody. Along these lines, yes, there is a space for Juan,” Mourinho included.
Mata scored six objectives in 38 Premier League appearances last season as United completed fifth in the standings.
Since his landing in May, Mourinho has helped United’s squad by marking guard Eric Bailly, midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan and striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and, as per media reports, is pursuing midfielder Paul Pogba from Serie A champions Juventus.
The 53-year-old declined to remark on the Frenchman’s conceivable come back to United, however said he has three distinct options for his last significant exchange.
